In their feminist analysis, Robin Ely and Irene Padavic reproach researchers studying sex differences for failing “to consider how organizations as sociocultural contexts shape these differences” (2007: 1121). They admonish the research community that “if study after study reports findings that align with stereotypes and does not address why, then these differences – in temperament, values, attitudes, and behaviors – take on a determinative quality” (Ely and Padavic 2007: 1122). Ely and Padavic recommend that those who research sex differences develop “mesolevel theorizing, which focuses on the interplay between organizational features and individual-level processes (2007:1121). We agree, and would like to extend this orientation not only to sex and gender definitions manifest within organizations, but to other social definitions as well.
This stream considers organizations as mesolevel influencers of social definitions of equality, diversity and inclusion, and therefore as rich environments for social change. We invite researchers to submit theoretically and empirically informed papers that examine organizations as discrete sociocultural contexts that respond to and influence both the larger social definitions of gender, race, sexuality and other social definitions as well as the construction of identity in individual actors. We are looking for research that examines organizations as a mesolevel, a mediating context situated between the macro-society on the one hand, and the distinct micro-level of the individual, and interactions between and among individuals, on the other. The purpose of this stream is to explore the process of negotiation of social definitions within organizations and how this affects change in societies in general as well as individual self-identity and behaviour.
Possible Subjects include: Equality, management and diversity; trade unions, labor and diversity; organization politics, gendered lives at work; emotional labor; men and masculinities; women and femininities, and various gender identities; sexuality and sexualities as manifest in organizations; ethics; narratives/stories of equality in organizations; the body; competency and performance, emotions at work; religion or belief as it affects social status; entrepreneurship; harassment, prejudice and discrimination; work/life balance; unequal pay; networks; race/ethnicity; social inclusion/exclusion; disability; organization culture; international comparisons among social definitions; employment/equality law; leadership; corporate social responsibility; age and generational issues.
